PROJECT: 090603
Date: 06/03/2009
OBJECTIVE: To determine the comparability between Competitor-ST and XGS’s adhesives used to splice slabs of “Synthetic
Grass”.
SCOPE: This test Method is primarily intended for determining the relative peel resistance of adhesive bonds between flexible
adherents by means of a T-type specimen.
REFERENCE: ASTM D 1876-08. Standard Test Method for Peel Resistance of Adhesive (T-Peel Test). Some adjustments were made to
this test to reflect working and environmental conditions during material installation on sites.
PROCEDURE:
EVALUATION:
Competitor-ST: Very difficult to apply. Viscosity too high, too “sticky”. The adhesive doesn’t flow well into the cavities created between ridges on the backing material. Better tensile results were obtained when the synthetic grass was pressed on right after the adhesive application. Tools very difficult to clean. We were concerned about the solvent (acetone) vapors released during application. See manufacturer MSDS for material handling.
XGS’s DC Green: Easy to apply, flows very well. Significantly lower viscosity than Competitor-ST. Tools were cleaned using paint thinner. Synthetic grass was pressed on after foaming started to show on the surface (about 20 minutes)
T-Peel Test.
See below spread sheet for results
According with this test the most consistent results were obtained with XGS DC Green. We preferred the XGS DC Green because of the easy application. The adhesives firmly adhered to the backing material in such a strong bonding that many “blades” were pulled through the scrim mesh separating the backing from it. See pictures.
NOTE: Relative humidity, ground humidity, material backing humidity, type of material backing and workmanship are very important factors on the adhesive bonding.

XGS does not utilize acetone in any of its products and we want you to be aware of the health hazards that acetone carries with it.
Acetone - Health effects
Acetone can result in unconsciousness and damage to the skin in the mouth. Skin contact can result in irritation and damage to the skin. If you inhale it for long periods of time, it is dangerous.
The smell and respiratory data are known mostly from animal studies. Kidney, liver, and nerve damage, increased birth defects, and lowered reproduction ability of males (only) occurred in animals exposed long-term. It is not known if these same effects would be exhibited in humans.
